When 12-lead is best

Traditional Holter ECG displaying one to three leads may record all heart beats during a prolonged period, but the limited vector information might leave shortcomings in the ECG diagnosis. 12-lead Holter can better detect arrhythmias of ventricular origin.

Challenge
Traditional Holter ECG displaying one to three leads may record all heart beats during a prolonged period, but the limited vector information might leave shortcomings in the ECG diagnosis. Valuable rhythm information may be missed during times when patient’s cardiac electrical activity is not being monitored or when limited vectors are evaluated.

Solution
Deploy Spacelabs Eclipse Pro Holter for a 3-day detailed view of the heart. 12-lead Holter monitors can better detect the origin of arrhythmias, in particular those found in ventricular chambers.

Cause
The standard resting 12-lead ECG provides a bedside glimpse of the electrical activity of the heart including vector information, but this snapshot of a few beats for some seconds might miss the whole story. A traditional 1 to 3-lead Holter will capture electrical  activity for several days but provides a limited view of the heart.

Considerations
The 12-lead Holter ECG overcomes these disadvantages and should be preferred for detecting episodes of arrhythmias, determining their origin or for the localization of myocardial ischemia.

Implementation Requirements
Start with Spacelabs’ versatile Eclipse Pro Holter devices for 12-lead recordings up to 3 days in duration. Implement along with Pathfinder SL, in-depth arrythmia analysis software which provides high acuity analysis. Pathfinder SL includes advanced feature options such as QTc, HRV and Pacing analysis.

Post-implementation Impact
It has been found that continuous recordings provided a more accurate reflection of changes in cardiac electrical activity over 24 hours. In order to obtain a precise diagnosis based on the criteria established using standard ECG, a true 12-lead ECG with ten electrodes is advocated.
